In a stunning courtroom moment today in Brooklyn, NBA guard Terry Rozier officially entered a not guilty plea to federal allegations of wire fraud and money-laundering conspiracy tied to a sweeping sports-betting scandal. Prosecutors accuse him of being part of a scheme that exploited confidential game-day information,  including a 2023 instance where he reportedly signalled he would exit a game early due to injury, enabling associates to bet heavily on his under-performance.

According to the indictment, the co-conspirators funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars through online sportsbooks and retail betting outlets. The alleged manipulation stretches from 2022 to 2024, involving multiple games and other individuals charged alongside Rozier.

Despite the gravity of the charges, Rozier’s defense maintained his innocence in court, and a motion to dismiss the case on constitutional grounds has been promised. Meanwhile, Rozier was released on a multimillion-dollar bond as proceedings continue.

The scandal has reignited scrutiny over the integrity of professional basketball, at a time when legalized sports betting is flourishing. Fans and league officials alike are waiting anxiously for what this high-stakes legal battle might mean for the sport’s future.
